Disadvantages of the Mazda FW6A-EL gearbox

  • This is a fairly reliable transmission, but its first modifications could be problematic;
  • The central bearing often wore out by 100,000 km, causing a loud hum;
  • Then, shaft vibrations would break the overrunning clutch, sending its parts flying into the planetary gear;
  • Currently, all the main problems with this automatic transmission are related to wear of the torque converter clutch;
  • The products of its wear clog the solenoids of the valve body, causing jolts and jerks;
  • This dirt also clogs the heat exchanger, leading to transmission overheating.
