Volkswagen gearboxes

VolkswagenVolkswagen is a German car brand, one of many owned by VAG (Volkswagen AktienGesellschaft). The headquarters is in Wolfsburg. The Volkswagen Automobile Museum is also located there. The concern includes such manufacturers as Audi, Skoda, SEAT, Bentley, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Scania and others.

The name of VAG gearboxes consists of three characters:

  • The first character is the number 0.
  • The other two symbols are assigned alternately: the larger it is, the newer the gearbox.

Gearbox Volkswagen 01M

The 4-speed automatic transmission Volkswagen 01M has been produced since 1995 and is still used on Chinese cars. And in its time it was installed on almost the entire VAG model range. This transmission served as the basis for a series of budget French automatic transmissions: AD4, AL4 and DP0.

Gearbox Volkswagen 01N

The 4-speed automatic transmission Volkswagen 01N was produced from 1990 to 2005 and was installed on Audi cars with a longitudinally mounted power unit. This transmission is designed for engines up to 2.8 liters and 280 Nm of torque.

Gearbox Volkswagen 01P

The 4-speed automatic transmission Volkswagen 01P was produced from 1995 to 2006 and was installed only on minivans and minibuses from several automakers. This transmission was combined with engines up to 2.8 liters and 250 Nm of torque.

Gearbox Volkswagen AQ160

The VW AQ160 6-speed automatic transmission has been produced at the concern’s plant since 2009 and is installed on models equipped with a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated CFNA and CWVA engine. This gearbox is an updated and simplified version of the AQ250, that is, a clone of the Aisin TF‑60SN.

The VW AQ250 6-speed automatic transmission has been produced at the company’s plant since 2003 and is installed on many front-wheel drive models of the German concern under its 09G index. This automatic transmission and its updated versions AQ160 and AQ260 are clones of the Aisin TF‑60SN automatic transmission.

Gearbox Volkswagen AQ260

The VW AQ260 6-speed automatic transmission has been assembled at the company’s plant since 2009 and is mainly installed with engines of the EA855 family, therefore it is widespread in the American market. The five-speed robotic transmission VW SQ100 or 0CT has been produced in Mladá Boleslav since 2012 and is installed only on the most compact models of the concern: VW Up, Skoda Citigo, and Seat Mii. This single-clutch gearbox is based on the MQ100 manual gearbox with index 0CF.

The 6-speed preselective robotic transmission DQ250 or VW DSG-6 has been produced by the concern since 2003 and is installed on front-wheel drive models under the symbol 02E and all-wheel drive as 0D9. This gearbox with two wet clutches is designed for engines up to 350 Nm of torque.

Gearbox Volkswagen DQ400e

The 6-speed preselective robotic transmission VW DQ400e or DSG6 0DD has been produced since 2014 and is installed on a number of hybrid models such as the Golf GTE, Passat GTE and Audi A3 e-tron. This gearbox is designed for transversely mounted engines up to 400 Nm of torque.

Gearbox Volkswagen DQ200

The 7-speed preselective robotic transmission VW DQ200 or DSG-7 has been assembled by the company since 2007 and installed on front-wheel drive cars under the symbol 0AM, and after the 2013 update as 0CW. The version of the gearbox with two dry clutches for Audi models is known under its index 0BM.

Gearbox Volkswagen DQ381

The 7-speed robotic transmission VW DQ381 or DSG 7 0GC has been produced at a factory in China since 2017 and is installed on almost all modern models of the concern with a transverse engine. This gearbox with a pair of wet clutches exists in a version for front-wheel drive 7A and all-wheel drive 7F.

The 7-speed preselective robotic transmission DQ500 or VW DSG7 has been produced in Germany since 2009 and is installed on PQ35 platform models under the symbol 0BH and Transporter minibuses as 0BT. An updated version of the dual wet clutch gearbox for MQB models is known as 0DL.

CVT Audi 01J

The Audi 01J or Multitronic VL-300 continuously variable transmission was produced from 1999 to 2007 together with LuK and was installed on many Audi models with a longitudinally mounted power unit. The continuously variable transmission with a pulling belt was designed for engine torque up to 310 Nm.

CVT Audi 0AW

The Audi 0AW or Multitronic VL-381 continuously variable transmission was produced from 2007 to 2016 and was installed on many popular Audi models with power units up to 400 Nm of torque. At the moment, the VAG concern has abandoned continuously variable transmissions with a pulling belt.

CVT Audi 0AN

The Audi 0AN or Multitronic VL-380 CVT was produced from 2004 to 2009 and was installed on Audi models equipped with V6 engines and turbodiesels with a torque of up to 380 Nm. This continuously variable transmission is the rarest in its model family.

Gearbox Volkswagen MQ100

The five-speed manual transmission VW MQ100 in the only modification 0CF has been produced since 2011 and is installed on the most compact models of the concern with a 1.0-liter engine with 95 Nm of torque. Based on this gearbox, the SQ100 robotic gearbox with its own index 0CT was developed.

Gearbox Volkswagen MQ200

Five and six-speed manual transmissions VW MQ200 with indexes 02T and 0AJ have been produced since 1996 and are installed on many compact models of the concern with engines up to 200 Nm of torque. This gearbox is installed only on front-wheel drive cars with a transversely mounted engine.

Gearbox Volkswagen MQ250

Five and six-speed manual transmissions VW MQ250 with indexes 02R and 02S have been produced since 2003 and are installed on almost all models of the concern with engines up to 250 Nm of torque. The gearbox is intended for front-wheel drive cars with a transverse engine.

Gearbox Volkswagen MQ281

The 6-speed manual transmission VW MQ281 with index 0C9 has been assembled at the Barcelona plant since 2019 and is now installed on almost the entire modern model range of the Volkswagen Group. This manual transmission is designed for transverse units with a torque of up to 340 Nm.

Gearbox Volkswagen MQ350

The 6-speed manual transmission VW MQ350 with index 02M and 02Q has been produced by the company since 1997 and is installed on almost all models of the concern with powerful gasoline and diesel engines.
