The ZF concern introduced its 9-speed automatic transmission in 2011, but its production began in 2013. This is a very compact hydromechanical automatic transmission for front-wheel or all-wheel drive models with transverse-mounted gasoline or diesel engines and a torque of up to 480 Nm. Among the design features of this gearbox, we note the use of a locking cam clutch, a torque converter with its own crankcase, a vane-type oil pump, and an external TCM unit.

Disadvantages of the ZF 9HP48 gearbox

  • In the first years of production, owners often complained about inappropriate shifting and even an involuntary transition to neutral. But subsequent firmwares fixed this.
  • With rare oil changes, the valve body solenoids quickly become clogged with wear products and the gearbox begins to push. So renew the lubricant in this transmission more often.
  • The most famous weak point of this automatic transmission is the input shaft. It is squeezed out by oil pressure and when the pressure decreases, it simply cuts off its teeth.
  • When the transmission overheats frequently, the rubber parts in it become tanned and leaks appear. The forums also describe cases of failure of the TCM unit, which has not yet been repaired.
