Disadvantages of the Toyota U341E gearbox

  • This is a reliable automatic gearbox, but its valve body does not tolerate dirty oil;
  • With rare fluid changes the solenoids get clogged with lockup clutch wear debris;
  • And if you drive with a worn clutch, vibrations will destroy the oil pump bushing;
  • At around 150,000 km the Teflon ring usually wears a groove in the rear cover of the gearbox;
  • The oil pressure in the system then starts to drop and the clutch packs begin to burn;
  • This gearbox also dislikes frequent hard starts, as the planetary gearsets may not hold up.
