The Chrysler 42RH (A500) 4-speed automatic transmission was produced from 1988 to 1994 and installed in Dodge Ram and Dakota pickup trucks with the 3.9-liter Magnum engine. It was on this transmission that the popular 42RE electronically controlled automatic transmission was developed.

Using
The transmission was installed on:
- Dodge Ram 1 (BR) in 1988 – 1993;
- Dodge Ram 2 (DR) in 1993 – 1994;
- Dodge Dakota 1 (AN) in 1991 – 1993.
Disadvantages of the Chrysler 42RH gearbox
- This is a fairly rare, but very reliable automatic transmission and doesn’t cause any particular problems;
- Renew the torque converter clutch every 150,000 km, otherwise the solenoids will become clogged with dirt;
- Then, the clutches in the Direct and Forward packages will burn out due to reduced lubrication pressure;
- Around 200,000-250,000 km, it’s advisable to replace the brake band and reverse drum;
- Weak points of the automatic transmission include the centrifugal regulator and wiring.
