The Jatco JR402E (or RE4R01A or RE4R01B) 4-speed automatic transmission was produced from 1986 to 2013 and was installed in rear- and all-wheel drive models manufactured by Nissan, Ford and Kia. On Mazda vehicles, this transmission is known as the R4A-EL, RA4A-EL, RB4A-EL, on Subaru vehicles, as the 4EAT.

In 1986, Jatco released a new 4-speed automatic transmission to replace the well-known 4N71B. This automatic transmission was designed for rear- and all-wheel drive vehicles with engines up to 4.5 liters and 350 Nm and was adapted for severe operating conditions: prolonged low-speed driving, slippage, rocking, and towing large and very heavy trailers. In addition to Nissan and Infiniti models, this transmission was also found in Ford, Kia, Isuzu, and Mazda.
Initially, two transmission versions existed: the RL4R01A with hydraulic control and the RE4R01A with electronic control. An updated version, the RE4R01B, was released shortly thereafter. In Mazda vehicles, this automatic transmission is known as the R4A-EL, RA4A-EL, and RB4A-EL, and in Subaru vehicles as the R4AX-EL.

Disadvantages of the Jatco JR402E gearbox
- This is a very reliable and durable transmission, and many owners know this well and neglect its maintenance. Therefore, it usually arrives for repairs in such poor condition that it would be easier and cheaper to buy a used automatic transmission.
- The lion’s share of service calls for these automatic transmissions are related to electrical failures. Most failures here involve the throttle position sensor (TPS) or solenoid coils. Corroded wiring is also often the cause.
- A drop in solenoids’ performance results in reduced oil pressure, which in turn leads to worn bushings in the transmission and severe vibrations. If you ignore this, the list of parts that need to be replaced will gradually grow.
- When overhauling a transmission, in addition to consumables, the Overdrive brake band, the High Clutch steel and friction discs, and, less frequently, the planetary gears are often replaced.
