Gearbox Jatco JR711E

The Jatco JR711E or RE7R01B 7-speed automatic transmission has been produced by the Japanese company since 2008 and is installed in the most powerful rear-wheel drive/all-wheel drive vehicles under the Infiniti and Nissan brands. This transmission is paired with V8 engines with torque up to 600 Nm.

In 2008, Jatco introduced a pair of new 7-speed automatic transmissions to replace the JR507E 5-speed automatic transmission: the JR710E was designed for engines up to 400 Nm, and the JR711E for engines up to 600 Nm. These automatic transmissions shared most of their components with their 5-speed predecessors, essentially adding a fourth planetary gearset and additional clutches to the clutch packs, removing the brake band, and slightly updating the valve body with an integrated TCM.

To improve acceleration, the automatic transmission uses a multi-plate torque converter lockup clutch pack, which is equipped with a slip mode.

Disadvantages of the Jatco JR711E gearbox

  • From 2008 to 2010, this transmission in Infiniti vehicles would frequently shift into neutral when the accelerator was pressed sharply at low speeds, followed by P0735/P0739 codes. The culprit was a faulty valve body firmware, and after an update, the problem disappeared.
  • The transmission’s cooling system is poorly designed; its radiator is located quite low and quickly becomes clogged with dirt. Furthermore, a hot catalytic converter is located near the transmission pan. As a result, the transmission constantly overheats, significantly reducing its service life.
  • To compromise dynamic performance, the transmission has a significant slip zone and locks up the torque converter clutch, which leads to wear of the clutch. The oil quickly becomes contaminated, clogging the valve body channels, causing pressure surges.
  • A drop in oil pressure in the automatic transmission leads to rapid wear of the clutches. Usually, the B3 brake package fails first, then C1, and then the others.
  • Forums often report complaints about transmission electrical failures: the control unit, solenoids in the valve body, and even the output speed sensor fail.
  • Due to prolonged use with jerky shifting, the oil pump bushing breaks, and sometimes even the central caliper. The transmission also regularly leaks oil.
