Gearbox Chrysler 41TE

The Chrysler 41TE (or A604) 4-speed automatic transmission was assembled from 1989 to 2010 and installed in Chrysler models, GAZ Volga Siber and Mitsubishi Eclipse 2, under the designation F4AC1. However, this automatic transmission is best known as the transmission in the Dodge Caravan and its many counterparts.

Disadvantages of the Chrysler 41TE gearbox

  • The first versions of the automatic transmission were a bit crude and caused a lot of trouble until 1998;
  • The transmission doesn’t tolerate prolonged slippage, which can damage the planetary gear;
  • The torque converter clutch needs to be replaced every 90,000 km or it will damage the oil pump bushing;
  • The solenoid unit isn’t particularly reliable, but it’s inexpensive and easy to replace;
  • The electrical system can cause a lot of problems: wiring, contacts, and speed sensors.
