The Ford 4R44E 4-speed automatic transmission was first introduced in 1994 and was installed in pickup trucks and minivans until it was replaced by the 5R44E in 2000. This transmission is known in many countries as the automatic transmission of the popular Ford Scorpio.

Disadvantages of the Ford 4R44 gearbox
- The service life of this transmission depends entirely on operating conditions;
- Slippage, overheating, or, conversely, driving without warming up quickly takes its toll;
- Under load, brake bands break, bushings wear out, and leaks appear;
- A drop in oil pressure in the system leads to accelerated wear of the clutches;
- Friction dust clogs the solenoids, causing jerking when shifting the automatic transmission.
