The Ford 4R55E 4-speed automatic transmission was produced in the United States from 1994 to 2000 and was installed in several popular Ford models with both rear- and all-wheel drive. This transmission is a modernized version of the A4LD and was quickly replaced by the 5R55E.

The transmission was installed on:
- Ford Aerostar 1 (VN1) in 1994 – 1996;
- Ford Explorer 2 (U105) in 1994 – 1996;
- Ford Ranger 2 (PJ) in 1994 – 1997;

Disadvantages of the Ford 4R55 gearbox
- This automatic transmission works great with engines up to 3 liters, but not so well with more powerful ones;
- High torque quickly breaks the brake band and wears out the clutches;
- Frequent overheating aggravates the situation, contributing to the destruction of this otherwise good transmission;
- The valve body is often sent in for repairs, as friction dust clogs the solenoids.
