The Ford 6R60 6-speed automatic transmission was produced in Michigan from 2005 to 2008 and was installed exclusively in the fourth-generation Explorer SUV and the similar Mercury. This transmission was developed jointly with ZF and is based on the well-known 6HP26 transmission.

Using
The transmission was installed on:
- Ford Explorer 4 (U251) in 2005 – 2008;
- Mercury Mountaineer 3 (U251) in 2005 – 2008.
Disadvantages of the Ford 6R60 gearbox
- This is a fairly reliable automatic transmission, but its service life is significantly reduced by frequent overheating;
- First of all, rubber and plastic parts deteriorate and leaks appear;
- The control unit, located inside the housing, is also very sensitive to high temperatures;
- All other transmission problems are related to worn bushings or contaminated valve body;
- Regular failures of the transmission selector position sensor should also be noted.
