The Ford AX4N 4-speed automatic transmission was assembled from 1993 to 1999 and was a version of the AXOD automatic transmission with non-sequential shifting capability. This transmission is designed for installation in vehicles with engines up to 4.0 liters in displacement.

- Mercury Sable 3 (DN101) in 1995 – 1999.
Disadvantages of the Ford AX4N gearbox
- This transmission is considered unreliable; the automatic transmission is prone to slippage and overheating;
- Additional cooling is required to extend the transmission’s lifespan;
- Consumables include not only various bushings but also brake bands;
- Electrically, the automatic transmission’s speed sensors and gear shift switch fail;
- Due to design flaws, the valve body channels become clogged with friction dust.
