The Ford AXOD 4-speed automatic transmission was produced in the United States from 1985 to 1992 and was installed exclusively in the popular Ford Taurus sedan and its Mercury and Lincoln counterparts. The transmission was designed for front-wheel drive models with engines producing up to 300 Nm of torque.

Using
The transmission was installed on:
- Ford Taurus 1 (DN5) in 1985 – 1991;
- Ford Taurus 2 (DN5) in 1991 – 1992;
- Lincoln Continental 8 (FN9) in 1987 – 1992;

- Mercury Sable 2 (DN5) in 1991 – 1992.
Disadvantages of the Ford AXOD gearbox
- This automatic transmission prefers a calm, measured ride, otherwise its service life is greatly reduced;
- Frequent overheating due to slippage and sudden acceleration will quickly send the transmission to repair;
- Typically, the brake bands in the transmission break, the pistons burn, or the drums crack;
- The solenoid valves wear out quite quickly, and the oil pressure in the system drops;
- Lack of lubrication quickly affects the condition of the mechanical parts of the automatic transmission.
