The Ford AX4S 4-speed automatic transmission was produced from 1992 to 2000 and was installed in the Taurus sedan and its derivatives, as well as the popular Ford Windstar minivan. This transmission is essentially a slightly upgraded version of the AXOD-E automatic.

Disadvantages of the Ford AX4S gearbox
- This transmission is considered unreliable and is susceptible to overheating or intense acceleration;
- Typically, repairs are needed due to torn brake bands and burnt pistons;
- In more severe cases, cracked clutch drums must be replaced;
- The shift solenoid valves and main pressure solenoid don’t last long;
- A drop in oil pressure worsens the situation and increases wear on mechanical parts.
