Disadvantages of the Ford IB5 gearbox

  • On smaller models like the Fiesta, Fusion, and B-Max, this manual transmission works fine;
  • But on the larger Focus and especially the Mondeo, this gearbox can be a hassle;
  • Worn synchronizers and gears occur even at mileage under 100,000 km;
  • And by 150,000 km, the differential bearings often require replacement;
  • On cars with a 1.8-liter engine, the pinion pin often breaks when slipping.
