The General Motors 4L40E 4-speed automatic transmission was assembled in Strasbourg from 1998 to 2001 and installed in base versions of the BMW 3 Series E46 models under the designation A4S200R. This transmission is essentially a stripped-down version of the 5L40E 5-speed automatic.

Disadvantages of the GM 4L40 gearbox
- This is a relatively rare transmission, but it doesn’t have any major reliability issues;
- It’s ruined by infrequent oil changes: the solenoids and channels in the valve body suffer from dirt;
- The adjustable petal-type oil pump is also very sensitive to dirty oil;
- It’s also important to monitor the transmission’s cooling, otherwise the rubberized pistons will simply peel off.
