Disadvantages of the GM 4L30 gearbox

  • This is a fairly reliable transmission, and breakdowns only occur at high mileage;
  • The torque converter clutch wears out first, and vibrations destroy the oil pump bushing;
  • Then the solenoids in the Overdrive valve body begin to fail due to wear debris;
  • This dirt then corrodes the solenoid wiring, connectors, and even the valve body;
  • In the most severe cases, all solenoids and the oil pump have to be replaced;
  • The brake band and the drum to which it is attached are also considered weak points;
  • On large SUVs, the planetary gear sets sometimes fail and fail.
