Gearbox Hyundai-Kia A6GF1

The Hyundai-Kia A6GF1 or A6F22 6-speed automatic transmission has been produced since 2009 and is installed in virtually all compact models with engines up to 216 Nm of torque. In many markets, this transmission is primarily known as the automatic transmission for the Kia Rio and Hyundai Solaris.

A6 family: A6GF1, A6MF1, A6MF2, A6LF1, A6LF2, A6LF3.

In 2009, Hyundai-Kia introduced a whole line of new 6-speed automatic transmissions, the weakest of which was the A6GF1, designed for engines up to 2.0 liters and 216 Nm of torque. Its design is simple: a torque converter, a planetary gearset, a set of clutches and brakes, a solenoid valve assembly, and a selector lever connected to the transmission via a flexible cable.

Over its production life, this hydromechanical automatic transmission has been repeatedly upgraded, and after the base version, updated transmissions with the designations A6GF1-1 and A6GF1-2 were introduced. For example, the new torque converter modification has four clutch discs instead of one.

Disadvantages of the Hyundai-Kia A6GF1 gearbox

  • In the early years of production, this automatic transmission was notorious for numerous defects. The most notorious problem was the loosening of the center pinion bolts, which often led to fatal consequences and transmission failure. Jerking during shifting was also a long-standing problem, requiring firmware updates.
  • This transmission is very demanding of clean oil, and if the oil is not changed for a long time, jerking and jerking will soon occur during shifting due to clogged valve body valves. Further use can lead to oil starvation of all components and transmission failure.
  • With excessive vehicle use, especially with frequent slippage, a loud crunching noise may develop in the transmission due to stripped differential housing splines. Repairs with new parts are unreasonably expensive; it’s easier to find a used unit.
  • The first versions of the pump were sleeve-based and would spin due to overheating. The solenoid wiring harness and oil temperature sensor also frequently fail, and the plastic pan cracks when its bolts are overtightened to prevent leaks.
