The Hyundai A6MF1 or A6F24 6-speed automatic transmission has been produced since 2009 and is installed in many Hyundai models, but is most commonly known from the Sportage and Tucson crossovers. This automatic transmission is installed in SsangYong vehicles under its own designation, the 6F24.
A6 family: A6GF1, A6MF1, A6MF2, A6LF1, A6LF2, A6LF3.
In 2009, a large family of 6-speed automatic transmissions from Hyundai-Kia debuted, including the A6MF1, designed for engines up to 2.4 liters and 235 Nm. The transmission design is classic: engine torque is transmitted via a torque converter, the gear ratio is selected by a planetary gearset, fixed by clutches, and controlled by a solenoid valve body using a selector in the cabin.
Over the course of its production, the transmission has been upgraded several times, and a number of modifications exist. This is essential to consider when choosing a used transmission.

Disadvantages of the Hyundai-Kia A6MF1 gearbox
- During the first years of production, the manufacturer struggled with a number of transmission defects, the most notorious of which was the central pinion bolts loosening. This often resulted in transmission failure and replacement under warranty. Also, the problem of shift shocks was a long time in the making, requiring a number of firmware updates.
- This transmission is known for its very high demands on lubricant cleanliness, and if it’s not updated according to the official regulations, the valve body channels will simply become clogged with dirt, leading to shocks and jerks, and ultimately to oil starvation and automatic transmission failure.
- Another common problem with automatic transmissions is a crunching noise in the differential due to stripped splines in its housing. This transmission simply doesn’t tolerate frequent slippage. Repairs will have to be done with salvaged parts, as a new unit is very expensive.
- Weak points in the transmission include the oil temperature sensor, the solenoid wiring harness, and the plastic oil pan, which cracks when its bolts are overtightened to stop leaks. Also, the first version of the pump was mounted on a bushing, and it would spin when overheated.
