The Opel AF20 4-speed automatic transmission was produced from 1988 to 2002 and was installed in the first generations of the Astra and Vectra models with engines up to 2.0 liters. Until 1995, this automatic transmission was a variant of the Aisin AW50-40LE, and later, the AW50-40LN.

Disadvantages of the Opel AF20 gearbox
- This is a robust Japanese transmission, but it can be a bit of a hassle at high mileage;
- Problems begin with contamination of the valve body by wear products from the torque converter clutch;
- If the valve body isn’t cleaned promptly, the clutch packs will burn out very quickly;
- In the most severe cases, the oil pump bushing can break and leaks can occur;
- Weak points of this automatic transmission also include the brake band and the Forward/Direct drum;
- Forums often complain of malfunctions due to sensors or wiring.
