Disadvantages of the Toyota A241E gearbox

  • A known problem with this series of automatic transmissions is a broken wire in the solenoid coil;
  • All other failures are typical only of gearboxes with more than 250,000 km on the clock;
  • Under hard driving the torque converter lockup clutch wears out quickly;
  • The wear debris then clogs the valve body and jerking appears when shifting;
  • Next, shaft vibrations destroy the oil pump bushing and oil leaks appear;
  • Beyond 300,000 km the rear output shaft bearing may break up;
  • The shaft then goes out of alignment, which destroys the third planetary gearset.
