The Toyota A243E 4-speed automatic transmission was assembled in Japan from 1996 to 2002 and was installed on front-wheel drive versions of the Carina, Caldina and Corona Premio in the T210 body. The gearbox was paired with the powerful 2.0-liter 3S-FE, 3S-FSE and 3S-GE power units.

Using
The transmission was installed on:
- Toyota Caldina 1 (T190) in 1996 – 1997;
- Toyota Caldina 2 (T210) in 1997 – 2002;
- Toyota Carina 7 (T210) in 1996 – 2001;
- Toyota Corona 11 (T210) in 1996 – 2001.
Disadvantages of the Toyota A243E gearbox
- The signature problem of this line of gearboxes is a broken wire in the solenoid coil;
- Otherwise these gearboxes are reliable and failures occur only at high mileage;
- As with other automatics, it all starts with heavy wear of the torque converter lockup clutch;
- This debris then clogs the valve body and noticeable jerking appears;
- Next, shaft vibrations destroy the oil pump bushing and oil leaks begin;
- After 250,000 – 300,000 km the rear output shaft bearing may wear out;
- This quickly leads to shaft misalignment and destruction of the third planetary gearset.
