The Toyota A243F 4-speed automatic transmission was built at the Japanese plant from 1996 to 2002 and was installed on all-wheel drive versions of the Caldina, Ipsum, Gaia, Nadia and Corona Premio. The gearbox was paired with petrol engines, while diesel versions received the similar A241F.

The transmission was installed on:
- Toyota Caldina 2 (T210) in 1997 – 2002;
- Toyota Carina 7 (T210) in 1996 – 2001;
- Toyota Corona 11 (T210) in 1996 – 2001;
- Toyota Gaia 1 (XM10) in 1998 – 2002;
- Toyota Ipsum 1 (XM10) in 1996 – 2001;
- Toyota Nadia 1 (XN10) in 1998 – 2002.
Disadvantages of the Toyota A243F gearbox
- In practice the only frequent complaint is a broken wire in the solenoid coil;
- Otherwise the automatics of this series are very reliable, with a service life of over 300,000 km;
- As with any gearbox, the trouble starts with heavy wear of the torque converter lockup clutch;
- This debris then flies into the valve body and the gearbox starts jerking when shifting;
- Next, shaft vibrations destroy the oil pump bushing and lubricant leaks appear;
- At high mileage the rear output shaft bearing often wears out as well;
- This leads to shaft misalignment and then destruction of the third planetary gearset.
