The Toyota A246E 4-speed automatic transmission was produced in Japan from 1992 to 2007 and was installed on such popular front-wheel drive models as the Avensis, Celica, Corolla and Matrix. On the Pontiac Vibe this gearbox was fitted under its own index, Aisin AW72-41LE.

Disadvantages of the Toyota A246E gearbox
- A known problem of A-series gearboxes is a broken wire in the solenoid coil;
- In every other respect these are fairly reliable automatics with a service life of over 300,000 km;
- Under excessively aggressive driving the torque converter lockup clutch can wear out;
- This debris then clogs the valve body and jerking appears when shifting;
- Next, shaft vibrations destroy the oil pump bushing and lubricant leaks begin;
- At high mileage the rear output shaft bearing can wear out;
- Because of this the shaft goes out of alignment and the third planetary gearset is destroyed.
