Disadvantages of the Toyota A244E gearbox
- Most often, owners of A-series gearboxes complain about a broken wire in the solenoid coil;
- In every other respect these are reliable gearboxes and failures occur at high mileage;
- As with many automatics, the trouble starts with wear of the torque converter lockup clutch;
- The wear debris then clogs the solenoids and jerking appears when shifting;
- Next, shaft vibrations destroy the oil pump bushing and lubricant leaks begin;
- After 250,000 km the rear output shaft bearing may also wear out;
- Because of this the shaft goes out of alignment, destroying the third planetary gearset.
