The Toyota U240E 4-speed automatic transmission was built at the Japanese plant from 1997 to 2006 and was installed on the Avensis, Caldina, Vista and Celica together with the 3S-FE and 2ZZ-GE engines. Essentially, it is a reinforced version of the U140: the load-bearing capacity of the friction clutches has been increased, and the pump, shafts, drums, and planetary gear sets have been strengthened.

Disadvantages of the Toyota U240E gearbox
- In the first years the control units caused many problems, but they can be repaired successfully;
- Otherwise this is a perfectly reliable automatic transmission whose life depends on how it is driven;
- With frequent hard starts the valve body gets clogged with lockup clutch wear debris;
- And if you drive with a worn clutch, vibrations will destroy the oil pump bushing;
- After 150,000 km the Teflon ring often wears a groove in the rear cover of the gearbox;
- The oil pressure in the system then drops and the clutch packs start to burn;
- A drop in oil pressure also greatly affects the life of the planetary gearsets.
