Gearbox ZF 8HP80

The ZF 8HP80 8-speed automatic transmission has been produced at the German company’s plant since 2022 and is installed in popular models such as the BMW 7-Series, X5, X6, X7, and the Range Rover. A mild-hybrid version, the GA8HP80XMH, or a plug-in version, the GA8HP80XPH, is also available.

Disadvantages of the ZF 8HP80 gearbox

  • This automatic transmission hasn’t been around long enough for detailed breakdown statistics to be available;
  • In the early years, there were frequent complaints about jolts and jerks, but firmware updates have fixed this;
  • Sometimes the jolts disappear only after a complete transmission fluid change;
  • You can also find descriptions of cases where the wiring harness needed to be replaced under warranty on specialized forums;
  • And since the transmission is installed with powerful units, the torque converter clutch wears out quickly.
