Gearbox Ford 6F35

The Ford 6F35 6-speed automatic transmission has been assembled at the Michigan plant since 2007 and is installed in front- and all-wheel drive models. This transmission was developed as part of a joint project with GM and is similar to the GM 6T50.

In 2007, as part of a joint project with GM, a 6-speed automatic transmission was developed for front- and all-wheel drive vehicles with engines up to the 3.0-liter V6 and 2.0 EcoBoost with 380 Nm. This is a typical American hydromechanical automatic transmission for transverse-mounted units with a chain-driven differential and an electronic control unit located outside the transmission. In 2012, the transmission was significantly upgraded, and therefore, it is sometimes divided into two generations.

Disadvantages of the Ford 6F35 gearbox

  • A common problem with automatic transmissions in the early years was a weak spring disc in the 3-5-R drum. It would often crack, followed by its retainer breaking off, scattering debris throughout the transmission. After the 2012 transmission update, this failure became much less common.
  • With vigorous driving, the torque converter lockup clutch wears out quickly, and if the automatic transmission’s lubricant isn’t changed, the valve body will become clogged with dirt before 100,000 km. And since the solenoids are sensitive to oil, simple cleaning won’t suffice.
  • When installed with low-power units producing up to 250 Nm of torque, this automatic transmission lasts a long time, but when paired with powerful V6 engines or 2.0 EcoBoost turbo engines, it lasts shorter, and wear of the differential housing bearing hub occurs even before 100,000 km.
  • Also worth noting is the weak transmission cooling system, the short-lived solenoid harness, the relatively short service life of the sliding bushings, and the rapid contamination of the speed sensors.
