Gearbox GM AF40

The GM AF40 6-speed automatic transmission was produced in Japan from 2004 to 2019 and installed in many front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive General Motors models. This automatic transmission was essentially a variant of the popular Aisin TF-80SC.

Disadvantages of the GM AF40 gearbox

  • This is a fairly robust automatic transmission, but it is installed with very powerful engines;
  • And therefore, active owners quickly wear out the torque converter lockup clutch;
  • Then dirt gets into the channels and solenoids of the valve body, and the automatic transmission begins to struggle;
  • The transmission’s weak point is the small heat exchanger: it quickly clogs;
  • This leads to overheating, wear of the Teflon rings, and reduced lubrication pressure;
