The Peugeot AL4 4-speed automatic transmission was produced jointly with Renault from 1998 to 2011 and was installed in popular models such as the 206, 307, 407, as well as the Citroën C3, C4, C5. This transmission essentially differs from the similar Renault DP0 only in its firmware.
Front-wheel drive 4-speed AT: AL4, AT8.

In the late 1990s, Peugeot-Citroën joined Renault in refining the 01M automatic transmission, and in 1998, the AL4 (DP0) automatic transmission was released. The main difference from the original Volkswagen design was the adaptive control unit, meaning the transmission adapts to the specific driving style of each driver.
The DP0 and AL4 automatic transmissions differ in some settings, primarily in temperature control: the Peugeot-Citroën transmission quickly switches to emergency mode due to critical overheating. This often prevents serious breakdowns and even failure.

Disadvantages of the Peugeot AL4 gearbox
- Due to a small heat exchanger, the automatic transmission overheats and goes into limp mode. High temperatures damage plastic and rubber transmission components, which in turn leads to oil pressure surges and other problems. Overheating can also warp the valve body, causing jerky shifts.
- Also, the bushings or cylindrical plain bearings in the automatic transmission, which also act as seals, wear out quickly, causing a significant drop in lubrication pressure. The oil pump operates at maximum capacity, which in turn reduces the service life of the solenoids.
- For the reasons described above, the solenoids in automatic transmissions have a short lifespan, and owners often have to replace them several times over 100,000 km. Besides the original Acutex, there is a slightly more reliable alternative from Borg-Warner.
- The weak points of this transmission include an unreliable electronic control unit, torque converter, needle bearings, brake band, and a tendency to leak.
