The Toyota A343E 4-speed automatic transmission has been produced by the company since 1990 and is installed on rear-wheel drive versions of pickups and vans such as the HiAce and Hilux. There is also a version of this gearbox for sports models with the 2.5-liter turbocharged 1JZ-GTE engine.

Disadvantages of the Toyota A343E gearbox
- This is a reliable and durable gearbox and problems appear only at high mileage;
- Under overly active driving the torque converter lockup clutch wears out by 200,000 – 250,000 km;
- This debris then clogs the solenoids in the valve body and the automatic transmission starts jerking;
- Shaft vibrations appear next and quickly destroy the oil pump bushing;
- It is also important to watch the gearbox cooling, as overheating greatly shortens its service life.
