The Toyota A540H 4-speed automatic transmission was produced in Japan from 1988 to 2002 and was installed on all-wheel drive versions of such popular models as the Carina, Corona and Vista. In the vast majority of cases this gearbox was paired with the 2.0-liter 3S-FE engine.

Disadvantages of the Toyota A540H gearbox
- A known problem of the early production automatic transmissions was failure of the reverse gear;
- Otherwise this is a very reliable gearbox and failures occur only at high mileage;
- It all starts with critical wear of the torque converter lockup clutch;
- The wear debris then clogs the valve body and jerking appears when shifting;
- Next, shaft vibrations destroy the oil pump bushing and lubricant leaks begin.
