The Toyota U440E 4-speed automatic transmission was assembled at the plant in Japan from 1999 to 2005 and was installed on models such as the Vitz, Yaris and Platz together with the 1.0-liter 1SZ-FE engine. In the Aisin range this gearbox is known under its own index, AW80-40LE.

The transmission was installed on:
- Toyota Platz 1 (XP10) in 1999 – 2005;
- Toyota Yaris 1 (XP10) in 1999 – 2005;
- Toyota Vitz 1 (XP10) in 1999 – 2004.
Disadvantages of the Toyota U440E gearbox
- This gearbox is paired with a 1.0-liter engine and lasts much longer than the U441E;
- With calm owners who change the oil often, the transmission covers up to 300,000 km;
- After 250,000 km the line pressure solenoid usually wears out critically;
- The oil pressure in the system then drops and the clutch packs start to burn;
- At high mileage the oil pump seal often leaks, which is also dangerous for the gearbox;
- Problems with the rear cover and the thrust bearing are typical of the whole U-series.
