The 8-speed automatic transmission Aisin TG-81SC has been produced by the concern since 2013 in three different versions: Light Torque AWF8F35, Medium Torque AWF8F45 or Heavy Duty AWF8G45. This gearbox is known as BMW GA8F22AW, GM AF50, VW AQ450, Toyota U881 or Peugeot AMN8.

Description of the device of the Aisin TG81SC
In 2013, Aisin introduced its first 8-speed automatic transmission for front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles with a transverse powertrain. This automatic transmission was offered on models from many manufacturers in three different modifications: Light Torque AWF8F35 for engines up to 350 Nm, Medium Torque AWF8F45 for engines up to 480 Nm, and Heavy Duty AWF8G45 for diesel powertrains with the same torque.
This automatic transmission was used by more than a dozen manufacturers and is known under different names: on cars from GM as AF50-8, BMW and Mini as GA8F22AW, Volkswagen as AQ450, Lexus as U881 and on numerous models from the Stellantis concern under its own index AMN8. Also based on this automatic transmission, a related, but slightly simplified AWF8G30 automatic transmission was created, which was installed on Peugeot-Citroen models as ATN8, on VAG as AQ300-8F, on Toyota as UB80.

Maintenance regulations for the TG-81SC
The manufacturer does not regulate oil changes, but we recommend changing it every 60,000 km. At the factory, 7.6 liters of lubricant are poured, but with a partial replacement, 3.0 to 4.0 liters are drained. With a complete oil change using the replacement method on a special device, up to 12.5 liters are used. Initially, it was recommended to use Aisin AW-1 lubricant, and since 2018, Aisin AW-2.
Disadvantages of the Aisin TG-81SC gearbox
Problems of the first years
This is a reliable gearbox, but in the first years of production it could cause trouble: on the forums you can find complaints about lubricant leaks, jolts and inadequate gear shifts. But all such problems were usually resolved under warranty and have long been eliminated by dealers.
Hydraulic unit
This gearbox is in most cases installed with very powerful power units, so the clutch locking its torque converter wears out quite quickly and contaminates the lubricant, channels and solenoids of the hydraulic unit. So change the oil more often.
Heat exchanger
This automatic transmission has a small heat exchanger and it can become clogged by 100,000 km, and then the gearbox will start to overheat, which greatly reduces the resource of Teflon rings. All this leads to a decrease in oil pressure in the system and wear of the clutches in the packs.
Other disadvantages
Also, the servicemen often changes the brake band and separator plate in the hydraulic unit. And also, the oil filter can only be replaced with a complete disassembly of the gearbox.
The manufacturer stated the resource of the TG-81SC gearbox at 200,000 km, but this automatic transmission runs 300,000 km.
